Kaaso nro 1

I’ve never considered myself as a sock knitter… but lately my collaborations have been all about socks. How did this happen?

Well my resent collaboration started actually quite some time ago; in the spring of 2019. (Right after the release of my Viisukat pattern.) My colleague was getting married and I got the honor of designing socks for her Maids of Honor.

I made some mood boards from where she picked the one that was most to her liking. And it was the one that I had imagined in my head to be some lace socks. (I can’t find the mood boards anywhere, so they might be somewhere in my previous lap top that gave up just after releasing Viisukat.)

Our next stop was a yarn shop: Ilo Finlad. There my colleague picked up the colours I would be using: soft pink, soft gray and white. Not the colours I would have choose… so it was a challenge for me to get in a romantic designing mood and come up with a pattern for soft pastel colours that would also include some lace.

The first pair got the name Kaaso nro 1 – Maid of Honor No 1:

When Sukka-Finlandia announced that they were looking for sock patterns for the contest of 2021, I knew I wanted to submit Kaaso nro 1.

That meant I had to finally write up the pattern! This time I also navigated to Ilo Finland and got the most lovely Aara Yarn Mieli for my socks. Since the design was originally something romantic, I wanted to use coulours as close as possible to the original pair. So the colours that I chose were Kriikuna as main colour, Helmi as contrasting coulour no 1 and Luja as contrasting colour no 2. – It should be noted that for the contrasting colours the smaller mini skeins are enough.

The socks are knitted toe up using Magic loop and the pattern includes these special techniques: figure 8 CO, intarsia, intarsia in the round, Tubular BO as well as some embroidery. So this is definitely an advanced pattern.

Sukka-Finlandia has so far exclusive right for the pattern, but I’m planning to release it later also in English.

Viisukat

In the beginning of February I stumbled on a short notice on Ilo Yarn stores Instagram account... Didn't think so much more of it except that the wish of merino wool was quite funny to me :D

But. My head works overtime even if I'd try to let things be... and suddenly my brain was full of ideas! Yes, I had a lot of ideas for the Eurovision socks! One idea got even to this stage:

Only to prove that my idea looked better in my head than as a knitted sock. Too much of everything: the old Eurovision logo, the new Eurovision logo, the Finnish flag (on the other side of the leg), rainbow flag, intarsia, stranded knitting, stripes and so on. I had to edit big time.

Obviously I had to keep the Finnish flag ;D And I really liked the rainbow colours, so that would also stay.

I knitted another pair with rainbow colour blocks and with the Finnish flag in a heart... and ripped it all! Because during the second sock my head was thinking of the rainbow stripes on my first proto knit and suddenly it hit me that would be the look I wanted.

Oops! There was a deadline! No big deal if it wouldn't have been the busiest time at work! Luckily I work pretty good under pressure and I met the deadline not only by knitting two pairs of men's size socks but also by writing down the pattern. Whooh!

So there's also the reason why the pattern has only a quick shot of the socks.

Testing?

I've had a plan for a really personal pattern for quite on time and the process to make one and further to turn it to a pattern has been long...  I just checked my bookkeeping and I casted my first Hjördis on the needles pretty much one year ago.  It was finished in December and the original cardigan in Tukuwool fingering looks like this:

I casted on the second version even before finishing the first one, 'cause I wanted to try it in two colours. Not a good idea! So not my thing and required a lot of concentration 'cause I wanted it also to bee seamless and that meant two coloured brioche with sort rows as well as intarsia edges. This version was not the relaxing almost brainless knitting that I was in mood for. So it took quite a while to get it finished and I got it done only 'cause I had a deadline: it had to be done before flying abroad to visit a friend to whom I made it as a present! The cardigan is made in some kind of wool blend (forest green) and a mohair blend (dirty peach) I'm though very pleased with the finished cardigan:

This summer I got a vision of a longer version that I just had to cast on right away! And I'm in love with my bright mohair blend cardigan:

Eufrosyyne is worked top down without any seams. The garter stitch collar continues as a frame through the whole hem and with optional fringes.

So this jacket that is named after my ancestor and is inspired by Finnish folklore. The stranded knitted stripe on the hem is a modification of traditional Finnish embroidery called “red embroidery”. (Here is one example of traditional red embroidery.)

This project has been a whole lot of work… I got the idea about a year ago and started to work with the first version of the jacket in the beginning of this year. The first one looked like this:

I wasn’t happy with it at all. The yarn wasn’t smooth enough… and the construction didn’t work in reality as I had imagined in my mind; there’s too much fabric in the front. I didn’t even like the first version of my stranded pattern. So I did some new calculations, modified the stranded pattern and started all over.

This time I also graded the pattern ahead and made the next version for a dear friend. I was really happy with the look on this one:

And of course I wanted my own version of the jacket! I ordered some really nice yarn and started to work with my own piece… only to once again notice that my yarn wasn’t suitable. This time it was way too thin. – The yarn has been used though to something else that I’m going to reveal shortly ;)

So I re-wrote the pattern once more, now for a whole new yarn weight. And this time my Eufrosyyne is spot on!

Hipitytti

Törkeen ihana pitsiverho jäi ekalla näkemällä kirpparille, kun ei ollut ihan mun värinen… Se jäi kuitenkin mieleen pyörimään ja parin nukutun yön jälkeen oli kiirus päästä heti aamutuimaan katsomaan olisiko vielä jäljellä?! Kyllä oli! Ja vielä kaksin kappalein!

Ekasta verhonpuolikkaasta tuli hippimekko:

Vuorena on täysvinoon leikattu pellava, jonka päälle rypytin pitsiverhon niin että hyödynsin verhon alareunan massiivisempaa kuviota helmaan ja hihansuihin. Koska vuori nyt joustaa hieman ja tuossa pitsissä on senkin edestä volyymiä, niin mekon saa sujautettua pään yli ilman mitään kiinnittimiä.

Se toinen verhonpuolikas voisi mahdollisesti haluta joksikin nilkkapituiseksi… Tarvii sulatella sitä ajatusta vielä hetken.

My flowerpower lace dress is from old curtain (again) that I found at the flea market (again). I didn’t buy it the first time I saw it ‘cause I didn’t think it was my colour… But I couldn’t get it out of my mind and to go and buy it after few days.

The lining is linen cut in bias, so it’s stretchy and the lace draped over it is so wide that I didn’t need any fastening but can slip the dress over my head. I exploited the massive flower motif from the curtains lower edge to the hem and sleeve cuffs.

Kesäpaita

Seuraava pikainen ompeluprojekti oli kesäinen olkapäät paljaaksi jättävä paita:

Tilkuista surautettu kasaan. Jouduin hieman leikkimään palapeliä, jotta sain etu- ja takakappaleisiin tarpeeksi leveän palan. Lisäpähkäilyä aiheutti reikäommelta muistuttava sidos, joka muodostaa yksinkertaiset mutta kauniit pitsiraidat. Tilkut luultavasti olleet aiemmin verhot… mulla ei vaan ole muistikuvaa mistä kyseinen kangas on mun varastoihin päätynyt. Mutta onneksi on, kun nyt sain siitä kivan paidan.

My next sewing projekt was an off shoulder shirt for the summer.

Made out of old curtains… probably curtains. I’m not quite sure since I don’t remember from where the fabric have found its’ way to my storage. But I’m glad I found it now in my fabric closet.

Ruusa työn alla

Yhden valmistuneen tuotteen takana voi olla monta inspiraation lähdettä. Itse prosessi siksi valmiiksi tuotteeksi ei ole ihan tuosta vaan rykäisty ja kyhätty kasaan, koska lasken valmiiksi tuotteeksi sen ohjeen.

Ruusaan sain idean monesta eri paikasta, jotka sitten pikkuhiljaa nivoutuivat kasaan mun päässä neuletakiksi. Idean eka poikanen oli Puikkomaisterin mysteerisukat, joiden ruusukuviot ihastuttivat. Seuraava lähde oli Tukuwoolin Facebook-haaste: minkä mallin neuloisit merkin langoista ja mistä väristä? Ihana värimaailma kutkutteli aivonystyröitäni ja rupesin hahmottelemaan kirjoneuletta… ja sinnehän hypähti mukaan nuo ruusukuviot. Itse lankaa piti jo käydä paijaamassa lankaliikkeessä ja päätös tuli tehtyä: tästä langasta pitää ehdottomasti tehdä ruusuinen kirjoneule.

Seuraavaksi surffailin netistä onko ”mun idea” jo toteutettu? En ainakaan löytänyt mitään lähellekään päässäni pyörivää kuvaa, vaikka kivoja kirjoneuleita kukkakuvioilla löytyikin. Sellaista mun näköistä ei tullut vastaan eli tämä idea piti ehdottomasti toteuttaa: lyhyt villatakki pyöreällä kaarrokkeella, jossa ruusut puhkeavat hiljalleen kukkaan.

Mulla ei ole hirveästi kokemusta pyöreistä kaarrokkeista eli pieni opiskelun paikka oli tarpeen: kotikirjastosta hyvä tekniikkakirja käteen sekä valmiiden ohjeiden tutkimista, mallitilkkuilua ja silmukoiden laskemista, näiden yhdistäminen kokotaulukoihin, sarjominen useampaan kokoon… ja kaiken tämän sovittaminen kirjoneulekaavioon. Kirjoneuletta varten etsin netistä ristipistotöitä ruusuista, joiden pohjalta kyhäsin kasaan neljä erilaista kuviota. Kaaviot tuhersin ruutupaperille, korjailin ja merkkailin useampaan kertaan kun kuvio ei sopinut silmukkamääriin ja tuhersin uuden version puhtaalle paperille ennen kuin loin silmukat puikolle.

Eka versio neuletakista syntyy varastolangoista; ylijäämää yhdestä äidin projektista, jota olen itse asiassa käyttänyt jo aikaisemminkin toiseen projektiin (riittoisaa lankaa), ylijäämää kahdesta omasta projektista (jälleen riittoisaa lankaa) sekä kasvivärjättyä vuosikertapurkulankaa. Iskin ensin varastolankojen kimppuun, kun en varmasti tiedä paljonko tarvitsen Tukuwoolin Fingering lankaa. Eli teen ensin proton, josta saan tarvittavan lankamäärän ja vasta sen jälkeen tilaan sen varsinaisen langan.

Proton aikana kirjoitan tarkemman ohjeen raakileen sekä korjailen edelleen kirjoneulekaaviota. Vasta neulottaessa huomaa ettei kuvio toimikaan neuleena ihan yhtä hyvin kuin mun ruksit ruutupaperilla eli tiedossa on vielä kaavion viilausta.

Hetki sitten projekti näytti tältä (tämähän on jo taas edistynyt kuvan ottamisen jälkeen):

Kuvassa yli puolet jäljellä vielä neuletyöstä, mukaan lukien vielä uudet kaaviot helmaan ja hihansuihin. Puhumattakaan vielä kaikista niistä eri työvaiheista jotka pitää tehdä ennen kuin itse ohje on julkaisuvalmis: proto valmiiksi -> tarvittavan lankamäärän laskeminen ja materiaalin tilaus -> ohjeen oikoluku ja tekninen editointi -> testineulonta -> takin neulominen varsinaisesta langasta sekä viimeistely -> tuotekuvaus -> testineulonnan palautteiden käsittely ja ohjeen viimeistely -> ohjeen layout. Ja sitten vasta pääsen julkaisemaan valmiin tuotteen: Ruusa neuletakin -ohjeen.

Ruusa under work

One finished item can have several sources for inspiration. And the whole process from idea to a finished object isn’t that quick either. Especially when I consider a pattern being the finished product.

My idea for Ruusa came from several sources that slowly united in my head to a cardigan. I got my first impulse from mystery socks by Puikkomaisteri; I got smitten by the really pretty rose pattern. The next source was a Facebook challenge/raffle: which pattern would you like to make from Tukuwool Fingering yarn and in witch colour? The lovely color scheme tickled my brain and I just had to start drafting stranded knitting motifs… and the roses jumped along. I had to go to a LYS and stroke the yarn… and the decision was done: I have to make a rosy stranded knit from this yarn.

My next step was surfing online and searching if “my idea” was already executed? I didn’t find anything even close to what I had in my mind, even though there are already nice flowery patterns. But there isn’t a one that looks like me, so I definitely have to fulfill it: cropped cardigan with circular yoke where the roses start to blossom.

I don’t have that much experience with circular yokes so a little study was in order: a good technique book from my home library as well as studying existing patterns, swatching and counting stitches, combining calculations to size charts and grading… and adapting all of this to a chart of stranded knit. For the flower motifs I searched some cross-stitch patterns for roses and based on them I drew four different patterns. I scrawled rose charts on squared paper, retouched and tinkered several times since the pattern didn’t fit the stitch count.

The first version of the cardigan I’m making from stash yarns; leftovers from both mums and mine previous projects as well as natural dyed recycled vintage yarn. I’ll do the first version from stash yarns since I’m not so sure of how much I’ll need of the actual yarn.

While working with the first version of the cardigan I’ll be writing up the pattern and adjusting the chart even more. Only after casting on and working with the chart I’ve come to realize that the pattern doesn’t work in knitting as good as it did on the paper.

TRIPLE TROMBI

I’ve released my first e-book!

Triple Trombi is a small collection of three accessories: a beanie, a neck warmer and a scarf. They all look pretty basic… but wait, there’s a twist. Literally! All three accessories are designed round the same characteristic: cables that form a twisting rib. The rib looks much more complicated than it actually is!

The e-book includes suggestion on how to alter the patterns for diverse looks. As well as a table for options how to adjust the patterns for different yarn weight and gauge.

How about a slouchy version of Trombi Beanie for example?!

Veikeepeike

Joulukuun ihme: astetta paremmat kuvausolosuhteet ja piti ottaa kaikki hyöty irti! Mutta koska on hys hys -ajat, niin esittelyyn pääsee tällä kertaa ainoastaan mekko:

Karkkitakki

Missio: eskarilaiselle uusi neuletakki talveksi (toivottavasti useammaksi, hihoihin neuloin jälleen ylimääräistä), kun vanha on jäänyt liian pieneksi.

Tarvikkeet varastosta: kasveilla värjättyä Novitan vuosikerta-Nallea, napit mun vanhasta puuvillaneuleesta (joka sai purkutuomion, kun lehdestä neulottu laatikkomalli nyt vaan ei pysynyt edes mun normaalia leveämmillä hartioilla) ja ylijäämähuopaa, kun sattui työpöydältä silmiin sopivan väriset palaset...

Puikot: 3 mm

Koko: noin 120 + cm

Langankulutus: aika tasan 250 g

Vaikka karkkiraidat ja pinkit napit olivat jo kivan pirteät, niin mun silmiin neuletakki tarvitsi vielä "jotain". Ja se jotain oli näköjään sitten huovasta leikatut tähdet helmaan.

Raidoitus syntyi raitageneraattorilla. Pääntien ja etureunan kaitaleen toteutin intarsiana niin, että ylhäältä alas neulottaessa ei takkiin tullut ainuttakaan saumaa ommeltavaksi. Langanjuoksut sidoin neuleen edetessä toisen etukaitaleen reunaan:

Kunhan takki pääsee lopulliseen osoitteeseen, niin saa tulla ne kylmät kelit :)

Olipas kiva pitkästä aikaa vaan tikutella menemään ilman että olisi koko ajan tarvinnut tehdä muistiinpanoja kaikista yksityiskohdista. Ja samalla tuli käytettyä varastoa. Seuraavaksi taas aivotoimintaa tarvitsevien töiden kimppuun.

Cardigan for a preschool girl who’s grown out of her old one. The yarns are re-used and hand dyed with natural colours: cochineal and blue lupine. Buttons are from my old cardigan and the felt stars are from left over fabrics. – The striping is done with Random Stripe Generator.

Hupsutteluhapsuttelua

Oon bongannut netistä jo useammasta paikkaa kivan näköisiä pitkiä hapsukaulakoruja; nahkahapsua, helmihapsuja, ketjuhapsuja jne. Oman version keksin aamulla värkätä jämälangasta!

Eka vanhasta Kotiväestä virkkasin kiinteillä silmukoilla "nyörin", jonka yhdessä päässä lenkki ja toisessa päässä nappi. Siihen suunnilleen keskivaiheille sidoin hapsuja, jotka olin eka kieputtanut tuolin jalkojen ympäri että sain suunnilleen samanpituiset. Kotiväen tarkkaa määrää en pistänyt ylös, mutta hapsuihin käyttämääni Katian Brisaa oli suunnilleen 30g.

Simppeliin lopputulokseen olen erittäin tyytyväinen:

Erittäin helppo ja nopea projekti. Tällaisen voisi vääntää vielä kirjavana versiona.

After scouting several versions of fringe necklaces around the internet, I did my own version this morning. First I crocheted the cordon with a loop in the one end and a button in the other end. And then I just tied the fringes to the cordon. The yarn for the fringes, I whirled round two chair legs to get them about the same length. For the cordon I used left over Kotiväki yarn as well as for the fringes left over Katia Brisa yarn.

Really quick and easy project. And I’m so happy with my new necklace.

Pitsin lumoissa

Työn alla taas vähän suurempi työ: uusi versio Huldan takista ;) Nyt ylhäältä alas neuloen, ilman ainuttakaan saumaa ja pitsimallineuleella.

On kyllä taas ihan älyvapaata puuhaa mun neulomiset, kun keksin sekoittaa mukaan "huvin vuosi matikkaa"! Kuinka kauan menee mallikerran neulomiseen hihassa? Sen verta kauan, että hihojen tikutteluun olen käyttänyt 18 tuntia! Entä vartalo? Kello väittää että yhteen mallikertaan käytän noin 2,5 tuntia!!! Ja helmasta on puolet vielä jäljellä... Hirvittää vähän mikä on lopputulos kun tarkotus olis saada helma ainakin peffapituiseksi. Jos ei ruve pitsi sitä ennen kyllästyttämään :D

Kokoja on tällä hetkellä sarjottuna viisi: S-XXL, tarvisko laskea vielä myös 3XL?

At the moment I have graded the pattern for five sizes: S-XXL. Should I add one more size, 3XL?

Viettelevä valoverho

Työhuonetta raivatessa osui käteen valoverhot... ja siitä se idea sitten lähti! Puhelimessa pölistessä osui silmiin vielä leveä pitsi ja sitten olikin suunnitelma valmis :) Muokkausta odottava mekko tarvi ehdottomasti fyllinkiä helmojen alle:

Ja koska kerrokset koostuivat pääasiasta läpikuultavasta valoverhosta, tuli lopputuoksesta erittäin viettelevä:

When going through my workroom my hands hit on old light curtains… and an idea was born! While on the phone my eyes also caught on a wide lace ribbon and I had a ready plan :) A dress that was waiting for some adjustment needed absolutely some volume under the hem. And because the layers were translucent, the result is quite seductive… ;)

Koukussa raitoihin

Raidat ovat koukuttavia! Ja työkin tuntuu edistyvän nopeammin raidallisena! Luksuslangat ovat kaikki kiinni työssä:

Välillä menee hermot sotkujen selvittelyyn... mutta kun lopputulos on mahtava, niin pieni hermojen kiristely ei haittaa:

Edelleen vihreällä linjalla

Mun lankapiirongista löytyy erikseen oma laatikko luksus sukkalangoille. Sieltä löytyy yksittäisiä ihanuuksia, joista ei vaan näytä tulevan sukkia… koska en juuri nyt tarvitse lisää sukkia. Tykkään kuitenkin tehdä suurempia töitä fingering paksuisista langoista ja sain loistavan idean yhdistää useampaa vihreää sävyä yhdessä kaurapuuron kanssa raidoiksi:

Luksuslangoistani uhrasin tähän tulevaan projektiin Laikalankaa, Sukkapuffaa, Väiskiä ja Noroa (linkit Rav stashiin).

I have yarn bureau, that has an own drawer for my luxury sock yarns. There are single lovely yarns, that doesn’t seem to became socks… ‘cause right now I’m not in need of new socks. I do love though to knit bigger projects in fingering and I got an excellent idea to combine several green tones together with oatmeal to stripes.

Vielä kerran / Once more

Vihriä projekti on viimeistelyä vaille valmis. Puuttuu enää pingotus, höyrytys, päättely ja napit. Niin ja tietysti muistiinpanojen tarkistus ennen kuin poistan kaikki merkkihakaneulat.

Yksi yksityiskohta pistää kuitenkin itsellä silmään. Sen voisi tehdä paremminkin. Ja neuleesta tuli niukahko… eli kokonaan uusi versio kokoa suurempana tulossa Pohjan Akasta:

My green project is almost ready. Only finishing left. And re-checking my notes before I remove my safety pin help markings.

There is one detail I’m not so happy with and it could be done neater. The cardigan is also quite tight… so I’m working on a whole new one in Knitlob’s Lairs’ Pohjan Akka, in one bigger size:

Yksityiskohta johon en siis ole aivan tyytyväinen on ”sivusaumojen” ruudut:

Joulusta viis kunhan päivät taas pitenee! Ei tule kuvaamisesta mitään tässä pimeydessä! Todisteena iltapäivällä suunnilleen kahden ja kolmen väliltä kuvattu uusi neuletakki:

Ei suostunut kamera ikuistamaan yhtikäs mitään ilman salamaa. Parempia kuvauspäiviä odotellessa, tuo saa toistaiseksi kelvata. Mutta tarkempaa raportointia varten tarviin ehdottomasti paremmat kuvat eli palaan asiaan.

Waiting for the days to be longer and brighter again, so I can take better pictures of my new cardigan. More about it when I have good pictures.

Intarsiaa

Viimeisin idea vaati opettelemaan mulle uuden tekniikan, intarsian:

Homman olisi voinut tehdä pienemmällä työllä ja käyttää apuna kirjoneulekäpyjä, kuten cummituksia... Mutta miksi tehdä jotain helposti, kun sen voi tehdä vaikeasti:

 

My newest idea needed me to learn a new technique: intarsia. I could have done it easier with bobbins… but why do something easy, when you can do it the hard way?! :D
